The Perky PuppyFAQ’s
Where is The Perky Puppy? 67740 Airport Road, Saint Clairsville, Ohio 43950. We are 0.2 miles from Interstate 70, Exit 213.
What is The Perky Puppy? The Perky Puppy is a home-based pet store, specializing in puppies and puppy supplies. We are Puppy Specialists!
Does The Perky Puppy breed dogs? No. We buy all of our puppies from private breeders, most of which are in Ohio. All of our puppies are hand-picked for us by specially-trained employees of The Perky Puppy. We do not buy from puppy brokers.
What's The Perky Puppy all about? Besides the obvious goals of keeping our puppies happy and healthy, treating customers in a fair and honest manner, and getting the word out about how cool we are, we have 3 main goals in life:
1. We strive to be the CLEANEST puppy store in the world! Nothing less will do.
2. We specialize in MATCHING you with the right puppy, based on information you provide to us. We will help you choose a breed that is best-suited for your lifestyle, home, family, allergies, etc.
3. We specialize in EQUIPPING owners to be successful in all areas of raising a new puppy, including housebreaking, socialization, and training.
We believe, with all that we are, that if we can do these 3 things perfectly, the rest will take care of itself! AND WE LOVE OUR PUPPIES! We average 1 employee for every 15 puppies in the store. Our employees keep the puppies happy and clean, monitor their eating and playing, monitor and record information about their health, and touch, play, and interact with them.
Does The Perky Puppy buy from the Amish? Unfortunately, a lot of dirtbag puppy-millers have given some good Amish folks a really bad name. We agree that there are a lot of crappy puppy breeders out there that just don't care about cleanliness, don't care about their dogs', or puppies' health and THAT must be stopped. However, some of those scum bags are not Amish. Some of our worst phone calls come from "local yocals" whose female went into heat and the owner thought they could make a buck or two...no shots, junk food, NO CLUE.
Just like all pet stores are not evil, not all Amish are the enemy...we check a lot further than the last name before we decide whether or not to do business with a breeder. So, yes, sometimes we do buy from Amish breeders IF they meet our requirements.
Why doesn't The Perky Puppy have dogs from the shelter?
OK...here goes...the Belmont County Animal Rescue League or BCARL (whose shelter is just up the road) has been asked to allow us to help them in the placement of puppies and young dogs several times. We have asked if we can work together on getting their pups into homes, whether that is through actual placement into The Perky Puppy or through joint efforts, such as pet fairs, etc. They have repeatedly refused our help. They are unwilling to work WITH us (or to let us work with them) in any way, shape, or form. We sent BCARL money to support their endeavors and Candace Fleagane (Fundraising/Publicity) sent it back to us, refusing it because they couldn't accept it "in good conscience".
WHAT?!?!?! So we called them. When we spoke to the President of the BCARL Board (Judy Geimer) about the money being refused, she stated "We couldn't accept it, because The Perky Puppy sell puppies", even though she admitted that she "knows nothing about how The Perky Puppy does business". When asked if they would have returned it had it been written for $5000, she stated that she "hated to hear herself say that." When we asked which dog had to die, because she refused our $100 check, she couldn't answer. When we asked why they begged for money in front of a local pet superstore, even thought they sold animals, she said that if they sold puppies and kittens, BCARL wouldn't be there. I asked her if BCARL knew that there are a whole lot of Easter bunnies and birds that are purchased and neglected each year. She said that she was aware, but that BCARL focused mainly on dogs and cats, so, again, they just could not accept our money.
Now, before you ask, let me tell you that the Belmont County Humane Officer has been to The Perky Puppy (just to check us out) and had zero complaints. So it's not like we're not good to our pups.
But, even if we were filthy dirtbag scumballs, BCARL should still accept our money to support the shelter. After all, that's where the money goes from people who are fined for animal abuse and cruelty. What would be the difference?NOW, let us say this: The people who work at the Animal Shelter day in and day out work their hearts out. Frankly, we wouldn't want their jobs. They see more animal cruelty and neglect in a day than we could stand. So, if they want to personally screen every applicant, to try to stop the cycle of abuse on a dog who has a second chance, that's great. We also understand that not every rescued dog is suitable or healthy enough for placement in a home and must be euthanized. We hate that, but it's the awful truth. Those workers truly serve the animals that they attend to every day. The volunteers and staff there have huge and generous hearts, and that can not be denied.
Our problem is with the fundraising and publicity of BCARL. Don't cry for money and give us a sob story about the poor dogs who can't live, because donations are down, and there is not enough money, when you're turning money down from us. It's fine if you don't want our help, but don't turn down our money. After all, it's for the dogs.
SO THAT'S WHY we don't have shelter dogs for placement. However, we do understand that there is a need for rescue. So, since our local shelter is unwilling to work with us, we have begun to rescue select dogs and puppies on our own. We have no separate housing and quarantine space at this time, so we are limited. Each dog or puppy that is rescued is neutered or spayed and placed in a loving home. We can't do a lot right now, but every little bit helps. We will continue as space, time, and money allow. No doubt you will see The Perky Puppy move forward in dog and puppy rescue operations in the months and years to come.
We've kept this story quiet for a very long time in the interest of the animals at the shelter, but we get asked so frequently that we have recently decided that the Ohio Valley is entitled to hear the truth. PLEASE DO NOT STOP DONATING YOUR GOODS TO THE DOGS AT THE SHELTER IN LIGHT OF THIS, AND PLEASE DON'T STOP ADOPTING SHELTER DOGS...they need you! If you have thoughts on this, please email us at jessica@theperkypuppy.com
What are The Perky Puppy hours? We are open for walk-ins on Fridays 12-4 and Saturdays 1-5 (No Appointment Needed). Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Sundays are by appointment only. Call 740-695-4566 to schedule an appointment.
Do your puppies have shots and de-wormings? Absolutely. ALL of our puppies are up to date on vaccinations and de-wormings. (We use Galaxy DA2PPv Puppy Shot and Safeguard Quad Dewormer - the same brands many vets use!) All puppies also receive NeoPar (an extra anti-Parvo vaccine) and Intra-Trac III (the kennel cough vaccine). Most of our puppies are too young to have all of their shots. When you vet check your puppy (according to our warranty), your vet can schedule the rest of the series of vaccinations.
What is your health guarantee? Click Here for Warranty
Do you offer spayed or neutered puppies? Most of our puppies are too young to be spayed or neutered without negatively affecting the puppies growth. We sell only pet quality pups, who have not been evaluated for breeding potential. We discourage dog breeding by amateurs, as it is a responsibility that is not to be taken lightly. We feel that spaying or neutering your pet is a part of responsible pet ownership. Any puppy that is reduced in price is required to be spayed or neutered by 7 months of age.
Can I keep my dog outside? NO. We believe that dogs are happiest by their master's side. Our puppies are not to be kept outside. At the time of sale, you will be asked to sign our warranty, which includes agreeing that your puppy will not be kept outside. We expect you to honor our contract. Failure to do so will void your warranty.
How do I reserve a Puppy? We have puppies arriving weekly! Please visit the Puppies For Sale page for pictures and pricing of available puppies! If you have questions or see a puppy that you would like, please call us 740-695-4566. We will take a deposit for the puppy you choose and will hold that puppy for pick up! Extended stays may require a small boarding fee.
Do you ship? No. It's too hard on puppies. We are willing to meet you at the Pittsburgh Airport. The fee is $150. plus the cost of a carrier. You must book your flight at your expense with a return carry-on pet. Expect to pay the airlines $50 for a carry-on pet (one-way).
Do you deliver? No, not currently.
Do you sell everything I will need to start my puppy off right? ABSOLUTELY! You will find our prices to be VERY reasonable! We sell an awesome puppy starter kit with everything you need to start your puppy off right! Visit our Webstore for details!
What else do I need? Well, we STRONGLY recommend that you have your puppy micro-chipped, prior to leaving The Perky Puppy! Micro-chipping involves implanting a small chip (about the size of a grain of rice) under the puppies skin. (It doesn't hurt any more than giving a shot.) It carries it's very own number and your puppy will literally "scan like groceries" at your local animal shelter, so he or she will bounce right back to you! (If your shelter does not scan AVID chips, let us know...we can help them get a scanner!) Micro-chipping can also identify a stolen dog (neighbor says he belongs to them...you swear he's yours...the microchip tells the truth...and it can't be removed). For more details, CLICK HERE!
Do you board dogs? YES!!! We just opened an awesome state-of-the-art boarding facility right next to The Perky Puppy! We built our facility to feel just like home, with couches, TV, and lots of love! For more info and to see some great pics visit our dog boarding and behind-the-scenes links!
Do you offer training? YES!! We've hired a trainer! Currently, training is offered one-on-one for $20 per hour. Call Jessica at 740-695-4566 or 740-695-2200 to schedule an appointment.
What about grooming/vet services? We do not currently offer grooming or veterinary services, but they are definitely a part of the future plans at The Perky Puppy! If you are experienced in these fields, please contact us at jessica@theperkypuppy.com
What is a Puggle? A puggle is "hybrid" or mixed breed dog. They are a cross between a carefully chosen pug male (usually 15-18 pounds) and a carefully chosen beagle female (usually 18-20 pounds). Crossing two breeds that LOVE to eat, you can expect your puggle to grow to 18-20 pounds, but don’t be shocked if it tops out at 30 pounds! Puggles are the perfect combination of a "couch potato Pug" and a "dopey, happy Beagle". They love to play and love to cuddle…it’s tough to find that all in one puppy! That’s why Puggles are so popular! Often, those cute puggle wrinkles are a matter of expression. When their ears are perked forward, their forehead wrinkles up! It's so cute! When they hear something behind them (or they are in trouble, which rarely happens), their ears drop and their forehead smoothes out. So, you can have both cute expressions all in one puppy!
